Becoming aware of a lucid dream is the best thing that can happen, but how do you perform Dream Induced Lucid Dreaming (DILD)?

Dream Induced Lucid Dream

What is DILD?

DILD stands for Dream Induced Lucid Dreaming, and this means that you became aware of the dream inside the dream. You can get a DILD with a lot of techniques such as Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dreaming (MILD), reality checks, meditation, dream journal, and much more.

Did you know that 60% of the entire population have experienced a lucid dream before, and did you know that this was 90% of the time a DILD?

In lucid dreaming, you technically only have 2 methods to become lucid, these are DILD and WILD. WILD stands for Wake Induced Lucid Dreaming, and this is a technique you would perform when you are trying to become lucid from the waking state to sleep state.

How to perform DILD?

You can perform DILD by following any technique that gets you aware in a dream and makes you lucid. This can be performed in many ways.

1. MILD.

The most common DILD technique is known as MILD this is where you do mantra’s to become aware of a lucid dream. MILD stands for Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dreaming. You can perform MILD by doing a mantra before you going to sleep such as “I am dreaming”.

You can read the complete guide of MILD to learn more about this technique.

2. Reality Checks.

Another technique that is popular in the lucid dreaming community, and is called reality checks. These are checks you do during the day to check if you are sleeping or if you are dreaming. Reality checks are often the most important technique for beginners because it could help you become aware of lucid dreams (DILD).

A reality check is performed by doing a check that is different in the dream state. The most common reality checks are:

  • Pitching nose.
  • Counting fingers.
  • Finger through the palm.

3. Dream journal.

Dream journals are journals that can help you remember dreams better, but it can also get you aware of a dream so it is another DILD technique. A dream journal could be a notebook or on your phone where you write down your dreams. This will help you with dream recall, vividness, and awareness.

You can read the complete dream journal guide to learn more about dream journals and how to write in them effectively.

4. Meditation.

Meditation can be performed to aid your lucid dreaming progress, and it can get you aware in lucid dreams, this means it is another DILD technique you can use. It should be performed before bed to get the best results out of the session. You not only gain awareness of the dream state but you could also gain better recall and more vivid dreams. In the long term, meditation can extend the REM state of sleep, this means you have an increased chance to become lucid because in the REM state you have an increased chance to become lucid in the first place.

You can read the complete meditation guide to learn how to use it for lucid dreaming and how to do it correctly.

5. All Day Awareness (ADA)

ADA is a hard technique to increase the chance to become lucid, and ADA can make you become aware of the dream state. ADA can be performed in multiple ways, but it basically means that you have to be aware of something all day that can aid your lucid dreaming progress. The most common ADA aims are:

  • Vision
  • Gravity
  • Breathing

With vision, your goal is to be able to be aware of the surroundings, this is extremely hard to do all day because almost everyone falls into autopilot during the day.

Gravity is where you focus on a part of your body to be able to be aware of your gravity. In dreams, your gravity often feels differently and it could help you gain an edge to become aware of a lucid dream.

Breathing is another ADA aim, this is where you are focusing on yourself breathing in and out, this could get quite annoying for most people but after some time you will not get annoyed by it anymore.

All of these methods are used to be able to perform a Dream Induced Lucid Dream (DILD).

6. Wake Back To Bed (WBTB)

A WBTB is another DILD technique that requires no skill. With this technique, you have to wake up during the night to gain better recall and an increased chance to become lucid. It is performed with an alarm, intention, or by using a mantra.

This is quite easy, but you can do this wrong easily, you can read the complete WBTB guide to learn more about it.

7. Senses Induced Lucid Dreaming (SSILD)

SSILD is a popular lucid dreaming technique that focuses on a cycle that is focused on your senses. SSILD is a hybrid technique that can help you become lucid with a DILD or it could even give you a chance to become lucid with a WILD. However, using technique requires you to wake up during the night with a WBTB.

This technique is known to have a great success rate, and it beginner-friendly.

You can read the complete SSILD guide and learn how to perform it in some easy steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are a lot of questions surrounding this topic, and I will try to answer all the questions that are most asked.

Is DILD beginner-friendly?

To be fair DILD is the best method overall, this is because WILD is hard to perform consistently and with WILD you have to wake up during the night to perform, while with DILD you just become aware of the state of the dream. However, WILD is often more stable lucid dreams and longer, while with DILD you often get lucid at the end of the dream, but you can extend it with Dream-Exit Induced Lucid Dreaming (DEILD).

Is DILD better than WILD?

DILD is by far a lot better than WILD, because it is more consistent and you only have to do certain things during the day to become better at it slowly. However, WILD can become more consistent if you are extremely good at meditation otherwise just stick with DILD and use WILD occasionally if you wake up during the night.

You can read an article about DILD vs WILD where I go in-depth on both techniques.

Can I get lucid without any technique?

Yes, it often a lot harder to become lucid without using any technique. However, there is always a chance you become lucid with only the intention to become lucid. There also exists something called natural lucid dreamers, these are people who can lucid dream without using any technique. Sadly this is only a small portion of the entire population, and I am not one of them.
