Lucid dreaming is quite hard, but what is the best way of lucid dreaming and how to perform it?
The best way
The best way to lucid dream is to do Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreaming (MILD) combined with reality checks, Dream Journal, and Dream-Exit Induced Lucid Dreaming (DEILD). Together they form a beginner-friendly method that gives a great success rate.
It is important to remember that getting lucid dreams, in the beginning, is difficult. So try this method for at least 2 months before switching to another technique.
How to start?
Starting with the best way to lucid dream you need dream recall. Dream recall is the most important thing to lucid dreaming because when you don’t remember your lucid dreams you won’t experience them. That is why you need to start with a dream journal. A dream journal is a journal where you write down your dreams. In this journal you expect to write even when you are not having any dreams recalled. You can learn more at my dream journal guide.
When you have some dream recall you can start to master the rest. It is important to remember that some techniques of this list are hard because they have to become habits first.
Reality Checks
Reality checks are important for beginners to lucid dream. A reality check is a check to check if you are awake or if you are dreaming. It is important to make this your habit, because if this is not your habit you may not use them in your lucid dreams.
Fun fact: When you perform a reality check in a dream, you are already aware of the dream state.
There are multiple ways to do reality checks and I suggest you read the reality check guide to learn more on how to perform it and what reality checks to choose from.
Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dream (MILD)
MILD is a lucid dreaming technique that requires you to do a mantra and visualize your dreams before you are going to bed. This helps you to increase the chance to become lucid and it can help you with your reality checks. MILD sounds complex but is quite easy to do for beginners. I recommend you read my MILD guide to learn more about the technique and how to use it.
Dream-Exit Induced Lucid Dream (DEILD)
DEILD is a lucid dreaming technique that helps you extend your lucid dreams if you wake up from them. This technique is basically a short version of Wake Induced Lucid Dreaming (WILD) and it requires you to not move when you wake up from a dream. This way you are still close to the dream state and make it easy to re-enter the dream.
I have written a detailed DEILD guide and I recommend you to read it because it is very important for your lucid dreaming progression.
What can go wrong?
It is important to know that a lot can go wrong. There is a possibility you won’t get any lucid dreams from the best lucid dreaming method. This is why I recommend you check if your fundamentals are solid enough to gain lucid dreams. The fundamentals of lucid dreaming are Recall, Awareness, and Consistency. If you don’t do the fundamentals you may fail to get consistent lucid dreams.
Short lucid dreams
As a beginner, you experience short lucid dreams. This could be a lucid dream of only 20 seconds or shorter. This is because you are not familiar with the lucid dreaming state and has nothing to do with you. It could also be that you are doing reality checks at the end of the dream and wake up soon after, then try to use DEILD to extend the dream. This is why it is called the best way to lucid dream because you have something to fall back on.
Why does it take long?
Lucid dreaming can take a long time to get good at. It is a skill like studying. You learn well for the test and pass the test, but after the test, you probably forget almost everything you learned. Lucid dreaming is almost the same as that. That is why I recommend you to stay consistent, even when you have an off day or a long period of time without any lucid dreams.
Tips for dream recall
Dream recall can be a struggle and there are multiple ways to increase your dream recall outside a dream journal. My favorite one is meditation. Meditation can help you gain awareness of the dream state if you perform it before you go to bed. You don’t have to follow any special meditation method. You only need to focus on your breathing and it already benefits your dreams.
Fun fact: Did you know that people who meditate a lot have more REM sleep, this means a bigger chance of becoming lucid.
You could also do reality checks, what I already suggested in the best way to lucid dream. Reality checks can help you with dream recall because you question reality itself, and that will help your subconscious to understand that you care about your dreams.
There is also another method that could help to increase your dream recall, and that is called All Day Awareness (ADA). ADA is where you are aware of everything all day. It is super hard and I won’t recommend it, because it could be a waste of time if done incorrectly.
Alternative
The best way to lucid dream is not for everyone. You could decide to do something else that could work as well. Such as only MILD or decide to go the more difficult route called Wake Induced Lucid Dreaming (WILD). It is important to remember that everyone is different and that this method could possibly not work for everyone.
The best alternative to this method is to do Senses Induced Lucid Dreaming (SSILD) this method is a hybrid between Dream Induced Lucid Dreaming (DILD) and WILD. I recommend you to read the SSILD guide to learn more about the technique and to learn to perform it yourself.
Final thoughts
Personally, I think this lucid dreaming method could help out a lot of beginners who struggle to start with lucid dreaming. I personally used this technique 3 years ago and had a lot of success. I stopped because I wanted to pursue another path of lucid dreaming. That is why I call this method the best way to lucid dream.
